Hayward 900 Wanda the Whale Above-Ground Automatic Pool Cleaner continues to collect positive reviews from pool owners who used it and they claimed that this pool cleaner works off of the vacuum created by the pool pump or filter. The cleaner is made more efficient by the use of two venturi intakes. With only about a half-square-inch intake, the suction on the bottom of this cleaner is ferocious so instead of Wanda the Whale, they should have dubbed it Sarah the Shark. Hayward is quite clear about the dangers of this product and the narrow operating environment. By making this thing cute and cuddly and allowing it to be categorized as a toy seems to be a massive product exposure. The Hayward 900 cleaner comes with soft vinyl feet which allow the unit to move around the pool without damaging a liner. To use it in a fiberglass or cement pool, these feet should be replaced with cork feet that will provide a better grip, and wear longer than the standard vinyl feet. These feet can be ordered from Hayward but are available at any decent pool supply store that sells Hayward products. The set-up is easy and it comes with 32 feet of hose and a manual and CD with video instructions.
Very few pool owners complained that this Wanda cleaner can’t climb just under 15 degrees. It works fine just a while, it goes and goes to deep area, and it can’t escape from the deep ground pool area. If you have clumps of dirt, grass, etc. underneath your pool, this may not be the cleaner you need. Although it is capable of getting itself unstuck, this cleaner gets caught easily. It moves slowly. The area it moved over does get cleaned but don’t expect the job to get done quickly. You almost have to stare at it to see if it is really moving.
